These are some common questions that people ask me about my work.
If I have not answered your question here, please contact us or call me on 0414 552 077 with your question.
Do you need to see a photo of my pet before giving me a quote?
Yes. But if you don't want to part with precious photographs at this stage, simply email me a few pictures and the size you are looking at (see price). I will confirm your price and if you accept the quote you send Painted Pets a 40% deposit to secure your pet portrait. I send you a receipt and ask for your best quality photographs. Email or post your photos to: Painted Pets PO Box 360 Rozelle NSW 2039 AUSTRALIA.
I don't like the background in my favourite photo. Can you change it?
Yes, I change the background to suit the painting and to complement your pet. If there is a colour you particularly like or want to pick up a colour in the room where your pet portrait will hang, let me know. I think plain backgrounds complement the portraits best, however, I can add a little detail if you like. We can talk about the options when I see your photos.
Is it possible for you to take photos of my pet for me?
Yes, if you are located in or around Sydney, I charge $120 to cover travelling, materials and I would be very happy to meet your pet. A pet photo session usually takes around 2 hours. I am also happy to travel interstate or overseas by arrangement, accommodation and travelling expenses are additional. If you want to keep the pictures I take for your pet portrait, please request a CD.
Do you do a sketch before you start, so I can see what I am going to get?
I paint directly from your photos, so there is no drawing involved. However, before committing to your painting, I email you a rough layout giving you an idea of colour and composition before I start your pet portrait.
Do I get to see a preview of my painting before I pay?
Of course. I email you a quality digital photo of the finished painting for your approval. You then pay the balance and I carefully pack your original contemporary animal portrait with your photos and deliver it to you.
What materials do you use?
I use professional artist quality oil paints on stretched gallery profile canvas (see canvas style). Many artists use pastels and/or coloured pencils for a photo-real approach. Some use acrylic paints (they do dry much faster). I use only oils for their rich buttery textures and vibrant, stable colours. Oil paints outlast any other medium so your portrait has more value and will live for generations.
Do the paintings come framed?
No, this is your personal choice. A gallery style canvas (our normal contemporary style) looks better unframed because of its high profile. However, if you wish to have your pet portrait framed, a slimline canvas will enable your framer to offer you wider selection of frame options to choose from. We are always happy to give you advise but don’t organise framing.
Do I have to pay a deposit?
Yes, to secure your painting, a 40% deposit is payable to Painted Pets before painting begins.
How do I pay you?
You can pay by cheque (to Painted Pets), credit card or funds transer. Email or phone us about secure credit card payment and funds transfer details. We give you a receipt for the deposit and a finalised invoice for your records when the portrait is delivered. Painted pets portraits are GST free.
Is delivery included in the price?
Sydney metropolitan delivery is free as part of the Painted Pets service. You can also collect the work in person, if you are local and if it's convenient. Outer Sydney, interstate and international deliveries can be arranged by Painted Pets — standard freight charges apply. All paintings are comprehensively insured and sent via Australia Post or Australian air Express, depending on destination. Delivery charges will be provided to you upon approval of the final painting. If you are a Painted Pets Gift Certificate recipient, delivery is free if you are located anywhere in Australia. Outside Australia, standard shipping charges apply as noted above.
My family would like to give a pet portrait to my aunt of her cat for her birthday —
we want to surprise her with it at the party but that's only in 5 weeks.
I am happy to work to a short deadline for a special occasion, however 5 weeks is too short a time for me to produce a quality work of art. I suggest you give her a Gift Certificate (the value you nominate does not appear on the Certificate) on her birthday. It's a beautifully presented gift for the day, and she can look forward to getting her pet portrait later — a second gift!
We want to give a portrait of "Bennie" our mum's dog to her for Christmas,
because "Bennie" recently passed away, but mum lives interstate. Is this possible?
Yes, if you can send me some good photos of "Bennie". If you don't have any photos, then you could give your mum a Painted Pets Gift Certificate. She can send us her photos at her convenience and she still gets a lovely Christmas gift.
You can choose a size and a value to suit your budget — and the price you choose does not appear on her Certificate.
I love my painting! Can you make some prints for me?
No, I am an artist, not a printer (sorry). I feel that prints can de-value your commissioned pet portrait. However, many people do ask about this so I offer a small print run of greeting cards. Printed of your painting and only for you. The maximum is 100. You can have your own personal message printed inside if you like, at no extra charge. And you will be helping homeless cats and dogs because
a portion of the proceeds is donated to animal welfare.
